Actor call out to play Fredrick Federici in a short video work.
In Preparation for the Final Bow
A call out for the audition of an actor for a four minute video piece.
On the 3rd of March 1888, bass-baritone Frederick Federici, the Italian-born, English opera singer, aged 37, played Mephistopheles in Gounod’s opera, Faust, at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. In the last act of the play, Mephistopheles returns to hell via a trapdoor behind theatrical flames. Singing his final note upon his descent, Federici suffers a heart attack and perishes beneath the stage.
When the other actors return backstage and learn of his death they are completely shocked and insist that he had been with them during final bow.
Ever since there has been sightings of Federici at the Princess Theatre. On opening nights, the theatre reserves a centre seat for him, and the appearance of the ghost of Federici is a sign of his blessing and wish for the success of the performance.
For the redevelopment of the Crossley Hotel we are creating a four minute, single-take video piece to be situated in the lobby’s restroom. Taking inspiration from the idea of being backstage we will depict Fredrick Federici getting into character for his final performance.
Filming through a two-way mirror the character will approach from the darkness of backstage. He is feeling unwell and dejected. Yet, as he applies his make-up and puts on his costume, he knows the show must go on and he will give his best performance as Mephistopheles. As his momentum builds so does the sounds of the theatre coming to life. At the crescendo of becoming the devilish Mephistopheles he returns to the darkness for his final show.
We are looking for an actor who is able to perform a visible change in character. Experience in opera or the theatre, and the application of make up is beneficial. Preferably we are looking for a male in the range of 35 to 40, but because we are seeking strong acting abilities we will also consider performers outside of the ideal “Federici” whom have excellent technical abilities. Excellence in collaboration is a must. There is no dialogue required, however we are interested in the warm-ups undertaken by actors before performance. Please send a head shot, height and shoulder width, any food allergies or requirements, along with a CV and brief cover letter explaining why you are appropriate for this role to email@example.com by August 5th at 5pm.
